  5.     When Pope John Paul II concludes his 10-day tour of Africa
  6. this week with a stop in the Ivory Coast to visit the Basilica
  7. of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, he will be consecrating
  8. the biggest church on the African continent. But critics of the
  9. structure, which cost more than $200 million, charge that the
  10. Pope will also be giving his blessing to the monumental
  11. extravagance of Ivorian President Felix Houphouet-Boigny. In
  12. response to questions about where the funds came from, the
  13. President insists that he used his own fortune to finance the
  14. basilica.

  16.     Embarrassed Catholic leaders have tried to stress the
  17. basilica's importance as a bulwark of Christianity. But others
  18. say Houphouet-Boigny has more earthly aims: to use the Pope's
  19. visit to clinch a seventh successive five-year term in the
  20. upcoming presidential elections.
